A Computer buying Guide for students

This computer buying guide is for students attending college, both those who are resident and those who are not.

The laptop is by far the best choice. However there are several things about a laptop that must be understood before you buy one. These are for those who are on the go.

Laptops come with a variety of configurations and Brand names. Brand name (for some) is no longer an issue, but more of a preference by the buyer. What is more important is what is in the laptop.I hope that this computer buying guide will help in guiding you in your choice.

The three main parts of a Laptop are the Main board, the processor and the memory.

A high end MotherBoard would naturally accept the most powerful chip on the market, the dual core Intel chips.

These are quite expensive and is not recommended for a college student.(Of course, if you have the money, then this does not apply). The pentium 4 is a good substitute and will do all that needs to be done by the college student. The preferred requirements are listed here:

  • The Motherboard
  • Medium to high end.

  • The processor
  • Pentium or higher.

  • RAM (Random Access Memory)
  • 2 GB is good 3Gb or 4 Gb is better.

  • Wireless capabilities
  • Hard Drive
  • 150 GB or higher.

  • Video Card
  • 2 GB is good.

  • CD/DVD RW/WR
  • For those who are not at college yet will prefer a Desktop or Tower since are best used at home. You will have to look at other comsiderations together with the above ie;

  • Power supply
  • comes pre-installed.

  • Monitor
  • Built-in.

  • Printer
  • The choice is broad as it is large. Don't fight yourself on this one

  • Floppy
  • This is fast becoming obsolete if it is not already. A good 4Gb flash Drive will be a good replacement

  • built in camera for video conferencing
  • Comes pre-installed.

These are the parts that you will need as a college student. Most Laptops come already configured at the store and the chance of you having any extras put in is almost nil or at a high price. If however, you purchase from a manufacturer online, Then you will be able to get what you require and can configure online what you want at the price you can afford.

Further, you can upgrade the parts being offered at very reasonabe prices.

A word of caution. Most of the products that are easiest to find online are quite expensive. Stores will usually try to sell products, they sometimes want to get rid of.So be careful.

The larger establishments are quite reasonable. This does not mean that smaller stores online or off are not. It is that these are just harder to locate online.

If you prefer a desktop or is not resident on campus then you can check out this computer buying guide for your Desktop information.

A final word on laptops. ALWAYS buy as much as you can afford. Laptops are not as easy to expand or upgrade and repair. Upgrading is a costly business. So if you can afford it, buy all that you can. Remember, these machines become obsolete very fast...three to five years. However, if you bought your laptop to type and do normal run of the mill stuff, then it will work until it dies a natural death. That may be a very long way off.

    Good luck and happy hunting.
